I think it is safe to say that most of us know what Instagram is and how it works. The app gets its name from the merging of two terms, ‘instant camera’ and ‘telegram’. You know the basic details. But, do we know all the inside details? With Instagram in its eighth year, let’s look at the timeline of this ultimate millennial app that has blurred the lines between personal and social.
It all began in October 2009 when Kevin Systrom started working on a location-based app called ‘Burbn’. In March 2010, he received a seed funding from Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz of about $5,00,000 while working on Burbn, the predecessor of Instagram.
On July 16, 2010, Kevin Systrom created the first Instagram post, months before the platform went public. On October 6, 2010, he along with Mike Krieger, launched Instagram on the public platform as an iOS-only app. The app hit almost 25,000 users on the day of its launch and by the end of the first week of its launch, it had as many as 1,00,000 downloads.

In April 2012, almost a year and a half after its launch, the app was made available on Android phones. In the same month, Facebook acquired Instagram. Guess who controls our social media now?
In May 2013, tagging was introduced. So now, you can make the lives of others miserable by not only putting up not-so-flattering pictures of them, but by also tagging them! Such fun! The following year, in June, we got the option of sharing videos on the platform. You thought photos were not enough to embarrass people…here comes a video evidence of their glory.
In June 2014, various editing tools were added to brighten and highlight your pictures. What? Who needs these filters? In June 2015, Instagram launched Boomerang. Now you get to see yourself fall off a chair…again and again and again…you catch the drift.
In May 2016, a revamped Instagram made an entry, along with some fancy business tools like analytics that allow you to check audience demographics and post reach. I clearly have no use for these. In August 2016, Instagram launched ‘Instagram Stories’. If you know you will regret posting pictures, put it up as a story! It vanishes in 24 hours, just like your confidence about the posts.
In October 2016, Instagram launched a desktop client and was made available on the Windows Store for Windows 10. Why, you ask? So do I. In February 2017, we saw the launch of a feature where we could post multiple pictures in one post. A slideshow on the go…a slideshow of your face…imagine. In June 2018, IGTV was launched. Watch people make episodes about their lives. 10-minute-long episodes.
So, this is the basic breakdown of what Instagram was and what it has done in the last few years, to become the giant that it is today. Is there any other invention or creation that you would like to read of? Do write to us!
